Why support Women’s Football?
Logicom Hub Ltd has sponsored women’s football since 2022 when I saw an interview with Alex Scott who said how hard it was to get sponsorship for the England women’s football team. They literally all had to beg companies for support. It got me wondering just how difficult is must at the grass rooots level.
It was then that our journey with Banbury United Womens Football was born, you will often find Benji and I on the sidelines on a cold Sunday afternoon cheering on the womens football team. Since 2022 it has not been a easy journey, we lost and gained a coach, lost and gained a whole team but in the 2025-2026 Season everything started to change. They started to focus on having fun, building support for one another in the way that women do. I have been really impressed with the way the ladies support each other through both the good and bad times.
At Banbury United, this season on the pitch the women’s footbal it has not been easy, goals have been in short supply and the wins have yet to come. What I have seen is a huge improvement on the understanding of the game, knowledge of each others skills and positioning and ability on the pitch. I know with their continued support of each other and practice that elusive win will come.
This weekend was a glorious display of womens football when Banbury United hosted a tournament for womens fooball. Fiona and I were there to support.
– collecting the scores from the completed matches
– most importantly starting and ending the games using an air horn to ensure that we stay on track.
– Helping with the raffle
Congratulations to all the teams that participated it was a real celebration of women’s football. 8 players on each side. 15 minute matches
- Banbury United Women
- East Oxford Teams 1 & 2
- Didcot Town Red
- Ashridge Park FC
- Didcot Town Green
- Longford Park Teams 1 & 2
- Carterton
- Headington
- MK United
- Oxford City Development
The day started with a 6-0 Win for Ashridge Park FC and a 2-0 win for East Oxford 1. The ladies fought hard through the 4 games that made up the group stages with the following teams making it to the quarter finals.
Quarter Finalists
- East Oxford 1 (0)
- Longford Park 2 (0) 5 Penalties
- Oxford City Dvelopment (1)
- Ashridge Park FC (0)
- MK United (2)
- Didcot Town Green (0) 6 Penalties
- Longford Park 1 (0)
- Didicot Town Red (1)
The Longford Park vs Didcot Green match kept us all on the edge of our seats as they went toe to toe with a dramatic shoot out with Didcot Town Greens claiming a very close victory in a round of sudden death. In the semi-finals MK United took win over Didcot Reds with a 1-0 win while Oxford City Development had a convincing 3-0 win over Didcot Greens. I really felt for them, some of the teams had played 3 matches in a row if we included the playoffs. So kudos to them all.
The Final
The final game of the tournament started with a choice. Did the finalists want to play 10 minutes each half with break inbetween or continue with a 15 minute game with no breaks? The exhausted ladies went for later (I don’t blame them). It was such a rough and tumble that at the end of the 15 minutes we had no score line and off to a another penalty shoot out!
Well done to all the teams that participated in this wonderful event and especially to the winners on the day Oxford City Development. It was a wonderful day supporting womens football and I would recommend everyone to get involved in their local community with projects and events like these. If you would like to get involved in women and girls football reach out to Banbury United and ask for Natalie Brown, Board member who is in charge of girls and ladies football.
